About Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a powerful and evidence-based therapeutic approach designed to help individuals process and heal from trauma, distressing memories, and emotional blockages. Developed by Francine Shapiro in the late 1980s, EMDR uses bilateral stimulation, typically in the form of guided eye movements, to facilitate the reprocessing of traumatic memories and reduce their emotional charge.

How Does EMDR Work?

EMDR works by helping the brain reprocess memories and experiences that may be causing ongoing emotional or psychological distress. During therapy, the client recalls distressing events while simultaneously engaging in rhythmic, bilateral stimulation—usually following the therapist’s finger movements with their eyes. This unique process helps the brain process the memories in a healthier way, reducing their emotional intensity and helping the client gain a sense of resolution and peace.
